Stand Up Paddle Boarding in Playa Hermosa

Stand up paddle boarding, or SUP riding, is becoming more and more popular. Not just in the U.S., but here in Playa hermosa, Costa Rica, surfers are taking to the stand up position vs. the prone riding experience, to get a different kind of wave.

SUP is not easy. It usually takes a few sessions to get the hang of standing up. Here in the Central Pacific of Costa Rica, it's even more difficult, since the waves can be larger in Playa Hermosa and Jaco Beach, than other areas of the country. The waves are steeper, more critical, and require more skill.

Lots of surfers like to surf in front of Backyard hotel, Marea Brava hotel, or the other places on the main strip in Playa Hermosa. Stand up boarders typically paddle out to the waves with their feet facing forward, shoulder width apart. Riding a wave, a surfer assumes the regular position, either goofy foot or regular foot. Since the boards are usually longer, a person needs to position themselves closer to the rail to ride the wave. The ease of catching waves however is enhanced, and overall SUP surfing allows a rider to catch more waves, per session.. and that's pretty cool!

The surf in Hermosa has been pretty good, last monday we received a huge Southwest swell which created double overhead waves and excellent conditions at most beaches. Going into dry season is different as we begin to see less of the Southerly swells and the sandbars have been built up to perfection.

This year we expect to continue the Saturday Surf contests just down the beach here in Hermosa. The Puerto Viejo Open Pro of Surfing was here at Marea Brava Beachfront Hotel, in decent quality surf a number of well-known pros including Gilbert Brown, Kyle Garson and others competed in waves. The contest drew a few hundred spectators, advertisers, the Bomber Sunglasses crew, Kolbi, and a number of other sponsors.

Categories ranged from Junior to Senior surf, and the contestants were scored on style, execution and presentation. All of the surfers did a great job, with commentary by Freddy "Salsiboy" and other presenters. Heats were scored in real time, and spectators got a glimpse of some of the best surfing in Costa Rica, right here in front of Marea Brava hotel in sunny Playa Hermosa de Jaco, Central Pacific coast of Costa Rica.

A sea turtle laid her eggs on the beach in a crowd of onlookers, with the Costa Rican Red Cross there to provide support and help transport the eggs to a safe hatching zone. Overall the day had great weather and good conditions for surf in Playa Hermosa, Costa Rica.

This April, the Red Bull Jr. Surf Team was here in Playa Hermosa, staying right here at our own Marea Brava Beachfront hotel. The young surfers ranged in age from 12 to about 21, all of them stoked to be surfing in the tournament. All of the youngsters participated on both days of the event, both free-surf and tournament. The event was sponsored by Redbull and other organizations that provide sponsorship to sports events for young people. Marea Brava hotel was happy to support these youngsters by offering accomodations at the beachfront hotel, right here in Playa Hermosa.



Said Carlos, one young grom, "I just like to surf every day, it's my favorite way to spend time" - well said young man. These groms came equipped with an array of tricks, and skill. The Red Bull car was also on the premisis, handing out Red Bull to our hotel guests. You can see this car driving around Jaco all the time, especially when there is a surfing event.

The young surfers had a party their last night at the hotel, after a long day of surfing. We hope to see them again next year, right here in front of Marea Brava Beachfront Hotel in Playa Hermosa, Costa Rica. Thanks to Red Bull and these kids, it was a great turnout and everyone had a good time.

The surf has been big and the waves keep coming! This shot taken just down the beach from Marea Brava hotel on September 12th. Large waves, barrels, tubes and tons of rides here at Playa Hermosa, in the Central Pacific region of Costa Rica. The sandbars have organized since the last swell and are lined up for a great month of tubes.
